Venus in Fur is about Thomas (Hugh Dancy), a playwright who just wrote a new play (also called
Venus in Fur) about a man who instantly falls in love with a woman and wants to be her slave, that way she can control him and hurt him. However, he cannot quite find the right actress for the role of Vanda, the woman. Luckily, a woman also coincidentally (or is it?) named Vanda (Nina Arianda) auditions for the role, even though at first may seem like the typical dumb blonde. Things get more complex, Vanda may not be who he says she is, the idea of who's in power is questioned, and the originally fine line between Thomas' play and his mind is soon blurred.
Nina Arianda is fantastic in Venus in Fur. She's funny, she's controlling, she's convincing. The whole theme of the play is power and who's in power, and you realize afterwards that she is in power of the audience. She hypnotizes you into believing that she is her character. If it were anyone else playing the role of Vanda then I would say Hugh Dancy was excellent, but he was overshadowed by Arianda. But it's not only the acting that absorbed me into Venus in Fur. After some of the lines they say, a chill goes down your spine at the brilliant writing. Venus in Fur is a must-see.
